Interaction of facial form and motion in dynamic face recognition

 Christina Anderson

Abstract

Identification of familiar faces is based on two categories of identity cues: static, invariant form cues and dynamic, changeable motion cues. While there is evidence that form and motion cues interact in identifying familiar faces, little is known about the properties of this interaction. Two experiments are proposed that will bring insight into the temporal as well as neural properties of form and motion cues interacting in the recognition of face identity. Herefore Experiment 1 will investigate event-related potentials towards dynamic faces with familiar form and/or motion. Experiment 2 will concentrate on the neural processing of identity for faces with familiar form and/or motion via fMRI. Experiment 3 will investigate a practical application of the differential processing of form and motion cues by studying the own-race bias for dynamic faces.
